Landscape folio, pp., 105, [1], printed on one side of the leaf only, including 34 full-page photographs printed in violet-tinted sepia, presentation leaf to front, as called for. Publisher’s straight-grain leather; titled in gilt to spine and upper board; borders and fleurons to boards; torch vignette to lower board; patterned burgundy end-papers. Corners and spine-tips rubbed; light scuffs to boards; upper joint starting. Internally bright. A very attractive copy.
A very rare souvenir album which recounts the regimental history of the Durham Light Infantry 2nd Battalion from the First Anglo-Afghan War, to the date of publication. Much is given over to the achievements of the regimental polo club, which started when the regiment was stationed at Poona in 1888. The photos that follow largely depict the regiment in various uniforms, with some portraits of commanders, and images of the regimental polo trophies. We locate two copies only world-wide: at the National Army Museum and the British Library.
