First edition. Octavo, pp., 123, [5] of publisher’s advertisements, plus tissue-guarded photographic author portrait frontispiece. Publisher’s original green buckram; titled in gilt to spine and upper board; white end-papers. Library ink stamp of the Theosophical Society in Scotland to front paste-down; blind stamp of the same to front free end-paper, title-page, and one text leaf. Corners very slightly bumped; library stickers to spine; top edge dusty; binding otherwise strong and square, the cloth and gilt bright. Internally clean save the stamps discussed above. A very good copy.
A utopian occult novel which centres on a benevolent magus who drinks a vial of blood to become immortal (perhaps a flirtation with the vampire motif?). The action begins 500 years before the main setting of the twentieth century. The ‘perpetual youth’ at the novel’s centre develops clairvoyance and the ability to become invisible. His utopian ideals include vegetarianism, abstinence from alcohol and tobacco, chastity, and a version of British Israelism.
