Facsimile bound by Smith and Settle in blue quarter goatskin over block-pattern cloth; spine on four raised bands, ornamented in gilt with images from the manuscript to compartments; titled to central panel in gilt with red and blue onlays in design by David Eccles; gilt rolls to edge of leather; all edges gilt; blue-green end-papers; commentary bound in blue-green paper over blue cloth back; titled in gilt to spine; gilt fillet to board; titled to printed label on upper board; blue-green end-papers. Housed in publisher’s original cloth-covered clamshell box; titled in gilt and red to spine of box with blue morocco label. Very minor scuffs to upper board of commentary volume, otherwise a bright, excellent copy. Near-fine. Photographic facsimile with commentary of the fourteenth-century Holkham Bible, which is illustrated throughout with scenes from the Creation and Fall to the life of Jesus and his Ascension. Purchased by Coke of Holkham in Norfolk in 1816 and added to the Holkham Hall library, the manuscript is now in the British Museum; it is believed to be of continental origin and appears to be the work of a single unknown artist.
