First edition (and the sole edition recorded by ESTC). Octavo, pp., [2], x, 348, plus etched vignette title-page, frontispiece, and 4 engraved plates, as called for. No errata slip. Contemporary calf, likely continentally bound; spine recased retaining raised band with title, and two gilt compartments; gilt double-fillets to boards; blind roll borders; fleurons to corners; gilt rolls to edges; gilt dentelles; marbled end-papers. Housed in custom paper-covered slipcase with the title-pages of this volume printed to upper and lower panels. Contemporary bookplate of one John Marriott to front paste-down; ownership inscription in ink of one J. H. Smyth[?] to vignette title-page. A few textual errors corrected in ink by a contemporary reader. Corners rubbed; scuffs to boards; binding otherwise strong and square. Light spotting almost exclusively confined to end-papers; offsetting from plates. A very good copy.
The first comprehensive book on the art since the publication of Ascham’s
Toxophilius (1535), and the first in English to draw significantly on sources from outside of British history.
