The connections between shipbuilding on Tyneside and Japan date back at least as far as the Meiji Period, when Japanese engineers visited Newcastle to better understand modern industrial shipbuilding. That co-operation and friendship continued into the fin de siècle, as the Armstrong works supplied the Japanese navy with ships and materiel. This volume, presented by the Japanese-led World Engineering Congress to the prinicpal professional organisation for Tyneside shipbuilding, is an another example of this long history of co-operation through engineering and technology in book form.
