First edition. Royal octavo, pp., [viii], 249, [3], including 22 plates by Kipling. Collated and complete. Publisher’s red buckram; titled in in white to spine and upper board; elephant and crocodile design stamped in black and white to upper board; wraparound animal border stamped in black and white; white end-papers. Manuscript book label of one Charles Hall [?] to front paste-down Shelf-wear to corners and spine-tips; spine ever so slightly faded; cloth otherwise bright. Internally excellent. A near-fine copy.
The author’s sole self-illustrated publication. Kipling drew the 12 poems and 12 stories from the ‘make believe’ tales he told to his own children. The stories include nursery classics such as ‘How the Leopard Got his Spots’ and ‘How the Camel Got his Hump’. The white pigment on the boards was so prone to flaking that it was removed for the much more commonly seen second issue (Stewart, 260).
