Original publisher’s uniform diagonal-grain green cloth; titled in gilt to spines; ornamental device stamped in black within black-ruled panels to boards; pale yellow end-papers. Ownership inscription of one ‘James Greetham’ in ink to contents of vol. 1, and to title-page of vol. 2. Faint soiling to cloth; corners softened; top edges dusty; bindings otherwise strong and square. Occasional finger-marks to contents. A very good set.

A scarce novel on the lives and romances of British officers stationed at Limerick, most likely written by someone familiar with the details of military life. The novel is sometimes attributed to famous Anglo-Irish war hero hero Sir Garnet Joseph Wolsely, 1st Viscount. The title-page states the novel is by ‘the author of Marley Castle’, a novel edited by the Viscount. While the idea of the very face of imperial masculinity writing anonymous romance may be appealing, Loeber and Loeber suggest that the novel was written by a friend of Sir Garnet. They note that neither the ODNB nor Lehman’s standard biography of the Viscount hazard an attribution.
