William Bell Scott (1811-1890) was a Scottish artist who spent much of his career as master of the government school of design in Newcastle. His best-known paintings are the friezes at Wallington Hall, Northumberland, which depict the history of the county. This book is illustrated after drawings in Scott’s Pre-Raphaelite style, and is bound according to the artist’s design. The binding of embossed leather is tooled in a Neo-Gothic style that pre-empts the Arts and Crafts bindings that would emerge in the later decades of Scott’s life. This edition was published in a series of two parts. The first, illustrated by the artist’s brother David Scott, was completed shortly before the artist died in 1849. William Bell Scott completed the project by illustrating this second part. Copies in the original trade binding, which was produced in at least three variant states (cloth, leather gilt and leather blind), can be difficult to find.
