Anne Bronte’s second and final novel, published originally under her pseudonym Acton Bell. The epistolary tale was considered shocking upon publication, with themes of alcoholism and domestic violence, and the flight of heroine Helen from her abusive husband along with their child was at the time against the law. The novel is widely regarded as one of the earliest examples of feminist writing, with the character challenging societal norms of the period.
