A People Bewitched: Witchcraft and Magic in Nineteenth-Century Somerset [inscribed by the author].

Publisher: Published by the author, Trowbridge;
Date of Publication: 1999
Stock Code: 15684

First edition. Octavo, pp., ix, [1], 181, [1]. Map of Somerset within text. Original burgundy paper wraps; titled in yellow to spine and upper cover; illustration of the county to upper cover; blurbed to lower cover. Inscribed in blue ink ‘For Caroline, best wishes Owen.’ To half-title. The Caroline in question was Caroline Oates, librarian of the Folklore Society. The slightest of shelf-wear to extremities. Internally bright and free of annotations. Near-fine.

An excellent copy with suitably esoteric provenance of this scarce study on the cunning-folk of Somerset. The author was appraised by no less a folklorist than Ronald Hutton as ‘our nation’s foremost academic expert on the history of magic’.
