FIRST EDITION. Large octavo. xiii, [1], 570, [6] catalogue. 83 illustrations including chromolithograph frontispiece; fold-out map of Central Asia to rear. Book Condition: Very Good. Publisher's mauve cloth with gilt titles & decoration; blind scrolled border to boards and gilt troika vignette to upper board. Cream endpapers with retailer's ticket to front pastedown. Spine and board edges sunned; upper front joint split approx 3 inches but holding. Wear at head/tail of spine and corners; upper front corner bumped. Inner hinges cracked but firm; a few leaves unopened. A little sporadic foxing, mainly to frontis and adjacent leaves, otherwise contents clean & bright; no annotation or inscriptions. Atkinson's second work on journeys in the region and sequel to "Oriental and Western Siberia"; he and his wife travelled nearly 40,000 miles in a seven year period and the books are based on their experiences with much topography, natural history and anthropology, including descriptions of hunting bears. A travel classic. Rare.
