Undated circa 1880. Small quarto, pp 204 & [205]-408. Illustrated with 101 captioned tissue-guarded steel-engraved plates of each subject together with a short biography of each. Half calf with 5 raised bands, gilt titles to maroon leather labels to spine, gilt tooling to compartments and gilt borders, with pebbled cloth boards; all edges marbled. Marbled endpapers. Spines lightly sunned and boards partially so; edges rubbed with minor wear at corners. Ffep glued to front pastedown Vol I. A little scattered foxing otherwise clean. tight copies. No annotation or inscriptions. A Very Good set.
Biographical dictionary with British subjects from Sir Ralph Abercromby to John Wycliffe. Other eminent portraits include: Locke, Dickens, Schiller, Newton, Livingston, Shakespeare, James Cook and Cromwell. Obviously originally issued in parts as this set is published without prelims (other than the commissioned title page) preface or index. Scarce. Heavyweight, so a contribution towards increased postage costs will be requested for overseas delivery.
