FIRST EDITION. Small quarto, pp 392. 11 plates including frontispiece of the Zetland Hotel at Saltburn by the Sea, plus numerous engravings within text, Subscribers List at end. Black half morocco with 5 raised bands, gilt titles to spine and foliate decoration to compartments; double gilt-ruled border to edges. All edges marbled ; matching marbled endpapers. Edges rubbed with minor wear at corners. White label with “781” printed boldly, to front pastedown; pencil annotation to foot of title page. Scattered foxing (almost solely confined to plate of John Reed Appleton) otherwise contents clean and tight.
Literary survey of the district from Cedmon (sic) to Rev John Graves by way of Bernard Gilpin, the Chaloner family, Henry Heavisides and other local luminaries of poetry and prose. Scarce.
