Percival Stockdale (1736-1811) was a prolific author and translator, born at Branxton in Northumberland. He served aboard HMS Revenge under Admiral Byng in 1756-7 before taking holy orders, returning north to take up the curacy at Thornhill. The two owners of the book were also clergymen. John James Cory (1790-1834) was the vicar of Aylsham in Norfolk, while Robert Lascelles Carr (1776-1811) was curate of St Mary & St George, Stamford. Carr was the author of a biographical account of Stockdale published in the Gentleman’s Magazine in October 1810 (referred to in John Drakard’s History of Stamford) and the loser in a lawsuit for defamation in 1809, having been found guilty of spreading rumours about another clergyman’s homosexuality and “sodomitical practices”, for which he was obliged to pay damages to the considerable sum of £200.
