Description of the Northumberland market town as it was in the 1830s, with chapters on Trade and Commerce, Morals and Manners, and Education, together with chapters on characters that Robb met including anti-slavery campaigner Frederick Douglas, Young Italy libertarian Felice Orsini, and Members of Parliament Jospeh Cowen, W.B. Beaumont and Albert Grey. William Robb was founder of the local department store Robbs of Hexham, which traded in the town for 200 years.
