Early novel by O’Brian (1914-2000), an engaging adventure saga aimed at older children which begins with a voyage on the South China Sea in the 1930s. The maritime setting foreshadows O’Brian’s bestselling Aubrey-Maturin series, begun some fifteen years later, and is told in his own distinctive style.
