Bound in quarter sheep and purple cloth over boards with gilt titles and ornaments to spine, red edges and mustard endpapers. Cloth faded to upper board, especially to top quarter, small chip to spine-tip, a few light spots of foxing mainly to prelims and edges. Overall a clean, tight, square Very Good copy of this scarce work.
Joseph Cowen (1829-1900) the English radical Liberal politician and journalist, was known as the Blaydon Brick (from the family brickworking business) and sat as Member of Parliament for Newcastle upon Tyne from 1874-76 following in his father Sir Joseph’s footsteps. This copy is gift inscribed by Jane Cowen, Joseph Cowen’s only daughter, who lived at Stella Hall, the family residence, over many years. Jane was awarded the OBE for services to local war relief agencies, and she established the Joseph and Jane Cowen Home for training disabled soldiers and sailors at Benwell Grange. Scarce.
