Publishers’ terracotta cloth with gilt titles to spine in price-clipped cream pictorial dust-jacket. Lower board marked by small areas of paper transferred from jacket. Ownership inscription of Paul Bidwell dated 8/78 to ffep; a hint of staining to top edge otherwise contents clean and crisp. Jacket surface soiled with closed nicks & creases; loss to top edge of lower panel. Jacket unobtrusively damp-stained, with scuff marks inside where it adhered to lower board. A very good copy in a good jacket.

This was the first major British excavation of a medieval ring-work, a type of fortification more commonly found in western and northern Europe. From the library of eminent archaeologist the late Paul Bidwell O.B.E. Bidwell was responsible for the excavation of Vindolanda, and the reconstruction of Segedunum on Hadrian’s Wall, and remains one of the most respected archaeologists of his generation.
