FIRST EDITION, Third issue, identified by the 12 books by Zangwill to Heinemann’s catalogue to rear, and original stubs present as called for. Octavo, pp. [4], 263, [1], [4] catalogue. Publishers’ green cloth with black titles and decoration to spine and upper board, and publishers’ imprint to lower board. A very good copy. Cover cloth rubbed at spine tips, with minor wear and bruising to corners. Leaves browned as is common for this title, otherwise clean, with no annotation or inscriptions.
Maugham’s episodic story of Charles Strickland, a stockbroker who abandons his old life to pursue a new career as an artist. The work is believed to be partially inspired by the life of Paul Gaugin, and has been adapted for stage and screen.
