Catherine Gimelli Martin is a professor at the University of Memphis and has been honoured with awards by the Milton Society of America. In this text Martin explores the “truth” behind Milton’s so-called Puritanism, a topic which has been heavily debated among Milton scholars. Though he often gets ‘lumped in’ with other Puritans of his era, Martin raises questions about the legitimacy of such claims due to Milton’s lifestyle being inconsistent with Puritan beliefs and practices, claiming his contemporary estimation is at odds with his modern reputation.
