FIRST EDITION. Octavo, pp. vii, [1], 274, [2]. In the original pictorial publishers’ cloth in slate grey with embossed bat. Cloth lightly soiled with corners and spine tips very slightly worn. Small neat ownership inscription to ffep dated 1913 and second dated 1945. Toned to endpapers and the odd spot of very light foxing to prelims otherwise contents clean, crisp ad bright. Overall a Very Good copy.
James’ second collection of ghost stories inspired by his academic interests in medievalism, antiquarianism and bibliography, including “The Tractate Middoth", “Casting the Ruins”, and “The Stalls of Barchester Cathedral”. A rich canonical work of supernatural literature which is as haunting to modern audiences over a hundred years later.
