Publisher’s royal blue cloth with gilt titles and stylised peacock heavily blocked in gilt to spine and upper board; all edges gilt with yellow peacock pictorial endpapers. Previous owner’s name written neatly to front paste-down and light foxing to tissue guard, otherwise a very clean & neat copy with only minor rubbing to spine tips; near fine condition.
Two novellas which poke fun at contemporary attitudes and desires. Headlong Hall was Peacock’s first novel which pokes fun at his now-unknown contemporaries. Nightmare Abbey is a gothic satire, which includes characters based on Byron and Coleridge. A handsome peacock binding which is illustrated throughout by H. R. Miller, with an Introduction by George Saintsbury.
