The report of the select committee appointed to investigate the effect of the circulation of paper bank notes on the British economy. Before the mid-nineteenth century, paper bank notes were issued by various private banks. This select committee report recommended that the Bank of England be the issuer of notes, a position ratified in law by the 1844 Bank Charter Act. An important milestone in the history of paper money.
