Psychopathia Sexualis is the foundational work of sexology. The first German edition of 1886 coined the term ‘sadomasochism’, and introduced the term ‘bisexual’ to the study of the human animal. The book was first issued with 45 case studies of ‘sexual deviancy’, which included some of the earliest systematic studies of homosexuality. Starting in 1886 with 45 case-studies, Krafft-Ebing expanded the content of the book over time, and while the first English translation of 1892 included the author’s earlier studies, the final edition edited by Krafft-Ebing of 1903 had ballooned to 238 case-studies. This is therefore the first edition in English to include every study from the complete 1903 edition, and is the standard English text.
