Publisher’s original original green cloth, gilt-stamped to spine and upper board in tower design by Thomas Sturge Moore; white end-papers; all edges untrimmed, half-title and initial blank unopened. Small, neat former ownership inscription of one ‘GS Ivy’ to front free end-paper. The slightest of shelf-wear to corners and spine-tips, cloth and gilt bright, binding strong and square. Contents clean and bright. A near-fine copy.
The first printing of one of Yeats’ most celebrated collections, including the poems ‘Leda and the Swan’ and ‘Sailing to Byzantium’. The binding was designed by Yeats’ friend and fellow poet Thomas Sturge Moore, who executed a number of design for Yeats’ cloth bindings. The upper board depicts the eponymous Norman tower at Ballylee, which Yeats restored in 1916, reflected in a pool of water. A bright copy of the first printing of one of the great books of Modernist poetry.
