First trade edition, substantially revised after the first edition of 1925. Octavo, pp., vii, [1] blank verso, 305, [1] imprint, [2] publisher’s advertisements, plus frontispiece portrait after an etching by Augustus John, three further illustrations by Edmund Dulac within text. Publisher’s original black cloth, titled in gilt to spine, in the original unclipped buff dust-wrapper, printed in black. Small, neat ownership inscription of one ‘GS Ivy’ in ink to front free end-paper. Toning to inner edge of upper panel, light scuffs to spine-panel of jacket, and light wear to jacket extremities. Cloth and gilt bright, binding strong and square, corners sharp. Internally clean. A near-fine copy.
An expanded and revised trade edition of Yeats’ esoteric and mystical literary experiment in automatic writing. The first edition was printed privately, for subscribers only. First state bindings are in quarter-cloth over paper-covered boards, whereas this full cloth binding indicates a later, indeterminate state. The first edition of Yeats’ great work of esotericism, with the text as the author ultimately intended it.
