First edition. Duodecimo, pp., [i-xvi], 158, [2]. With numerous photolithographs after drawings by Shephard within text. Collated and complete. Publishers original emerald-green cloth; titled in gilt to spine; vignette of Pooh and Christopher Robin to upper board within gilt fillet border; top edge gilt; citron end-papers printed with map of the Hundred Acre Wood. Later gift inscription in ink to initial blank. Spine slightly toned; very minor shelf-wear to corners. Offsetting to front free end-paper; otherwise internally bright. A near fine copy.
A lovely copy of Milne and Shephard’s beloved first Winnie-the-Pooh book. The ten stories within centre on Christopher Robin, Winnie, and the residents of the Arcadian Hundred Acre Wood, but can be read independently. Milne borrowed some stories from writings he had previously published in magazines, but the majority first appeared in this book, wonderfully illustrated, as stated on the end-papers, ‘by me [Christopher Robin] and Mr Shephard helpd’.
