William Speechly (1723-1819) was a gardener and agriculturist working for aristocratic patrons at Milton Abbey and Castle Howard and becoming Head Gardener at Welbeck Abbey for the Duke of Portland. He was well known for his skill in the cultivation of pineapples and grapes, writing a “Treatise on the Culture of the Pine Apple” (1779) and “Treatise on the Culture of the Vine” (1790). After his retirement he wrote “Practical Hints in Domestic Rural Economy” devoted to the management of cottage gardens, which was posthumously published in 1820, but his intended study on general rural economy and agriculture, for which his copy of Quadrupeds would have been most useful, was never written. A good example of the Fourth Edition of Quadrupeds with the additional association with one of Britain’s pioneering horticulturists. Tattersfield, pp 27-8. ODNB.
