During the commission appointed to prepare a scheme for an Anglo-Scottish Union in the early years of the 18th century, many questions were raised as to the value and necessity of such a union. Bishop Nicholson, long respected as a scholar of Scots and Irish history and a strong advocate for Union, published these medieval documents to prove that the Kingdoms had always treated each other as equals and without any legal assumption of superiority by England, thus furthering the want of a stable political connection which had been the cause of strife on the border for many years.
