The son of Glasgow shipbuilder Sir Thomas Biggart, young schoolboy Lawrence Biggart (Strathallen School in Perthshire) was in his early teens at the outbreak of WWII when he wrote to the politicians, monarchs, sports stars and other important international figures of the day requesting their signatures, and the 95 responses in this superb album make a fine collection. No doubt aided by his father’s business connections Lawrence nonetheless must have had a winning prose as one of the most remarkable aspects of the collection is that so many prominent figures, weighed down with the duties of wartime, took the trouble to respond. The signatures include those of six British Prime Ministers; David Lloyd George, Stanley Baldwin of Bewdley, Neville Chamberlain, Winston Churchill, Clement Attlee, Anthony Eden and some of their wives, numerous British ministers and politicians including half of the 1940-45 War Cabinet, British peers such as the Dukes of Norfolk and of Montrose, wartime heroes such as J A Cruickshank (V.C.), William Reid (V.C.) and Air Chief Marshal Sir Arthur “Bomber” Harris and monarchs such as King Haakon of Norway, King George II of Greece and Peter II of Yugoslavia. Also included are the Prime Ministers of Belgium (Hubert Pierlot & Camille Huysmans), Czechoslovakia (Edvard Benes ), Australia (R G Menzies, A W Fadden, John Curtin and Ben Chifley), Sweden (Per Albin Hansson & Tage Erlander), Norway (Johan Nygaardsvold), Northern Ireland (Basil Brooke), Canada (William Lyon Mackenzie), Southern Rhodesia (Godfrey Huggins), the Netherlands (Pieter Gerbrnady & Willem Schermerhorn), Eire (Eamon de Valera), France (Leon Blum), South Africa (Jan Christiaan Smuts), New Zealand (Peter Frazer) and Governor of Malta Lt Gen Sir William Dobbie. Also included are members of the royal family such as Queen Elizabeth (later the Queen Mother), Earl Mountbatten, conductor Sir Malcolm Sargent, actress Sybil Thorndike and many more.
