Top edges gilt, others uncut; decorative endpapers, with design around J. A. monogram to front and publisher’s initials to rear, both in blue. Housed in the original rare presentation box in pale sage green cloth to match bindings, with gilt titles and decoration; inner surfaces covered with floral paper. A few minor bruises to corners otherwise clean bright copies, free from annotation or inscriptions. Case a little toned and surface soiled with professional repair to lower flap, and a couple of small splits each end of upper flap. A Near Fine set in Very Good case.

This ten-volume edition of Austen immediately eclipsed Dent’s previous 1892 set by virtue of its colour illustrations. Brothers Charles Edmund and Matthew Henry Brock made over 200 Austen images between them over their career, and they were the first illustrators to produce colour plates for her works, some earlier editions of which had coloured front boards but not multiple internal colour plates. Mass production of colour illustrations was made possible by new lithography techniques and was a novelty in the 1890s, making this a sensation for Austenophiles. Rare.
