A veritable Rogues Gallery of notable northern criminals, starting with arsonist Jonathan Martin and ending with murderer William Shaw, by way of poisoner Mary Bateman, highway robber James Winterbottom and many other cases. The narrative is divided into a short biography of the accused, their crimes, an account of their trail (seemingly taken on the spot, and in some cases expansive) and finally ‘Observations and Reflections’ being musings on both the criminals motives and the reasonableness of the sentences passed. During the period, York Castle was used as a prison for those awaiting trial at the Assizes (criminals serving their sentences and debtors) and the Assize Courts were also held on the premises. Scarce.
