With 24 plates including frontispiece (complete, and including 2 unlisted in Plate Index); folding plan tipped-in to rear. Publishers’ red cloth with black titles to spine and upper board and black floral motif to upper board; edges uncut. Spine slightly sunned, and a little creased at tips. Ownership inscription in ink to ffep dated 1926 otherwise contents clean. A very good copy.
Comprehensive history of the venerable Cathedral Library at Durham, with Introduction and chapter by John Meade Falkner (1858-1932). Falkner is best known for his three celebrated novels; the smuggling adventure “Moonfleet” and the short horror novel “The Lost Stradivarius” and the atmospheric “The Nebuly Coat” ; after retiring from his position as Chairman at Armstrong Whitworth, the arms manufacturers on Tyneside, he became Honorary Reader in Paleography and Honorary Librarian to the Dean and Chapter Library at Durham, living on Palace Green for the remainder of his life.
