FIRST EDITION. Small quarto, pp. iv, 566. Bound in burgundy half morocco and reeded brown cloth over boards; gilt fillets and titles to spine. Cloth faded to top of both boards, morocco lightly rubbed at edges, corners, and spine-tips; some light scattered foxing limited to endapers. A square, tight and clean copy. With the identification of the anonymous author in pencil to title-page and some notable dates in the history of the town in pencil to margins.

Comprehensive account of the history of Newcastle including sections on the various Newcastle guilds, buildings, burial grounds and institutions. Including a curious chapter on “Morals” describing the “lower classes” who “display much individuality, and though rather dull and heavy in appearance their intellectual powers are usually solid and extensive”. Anonymously written, and provincially published by local Newspaper editor Alexander Laws (1834-?). The scarcest of the five principle histories of Newcastle.
