Duodecimo, pp. 144. With an engraved frontispiece portrait of Rochester. Bound in later nineteenth century half scarlet morocco and cloth over boards, with gilt fillets to corners and parallel to spine; 5 gilt rolled spine bands, and gilt spine titles; Top edge gilt, others uncut. Very lightly rubbed to corners and board edges, faintly soiled to cloth, frontispiece and title-page slightly toned. An attractively bound near fine copy.
Trio of writings on the life of the Second Earl of Rochester (1647-1680), the Restoration poet, courtier and Libertine, infamous for his rakish lifestyle, (or as Burnet describes his “Desires running after forbidden objects”) which furnished his poetry. Including the sermon read at his funeral after his death from venereal disease aged 33.
