Joseph Cowen (1829-1900) the English radical Liberal politician and journalist, was known as the Blaydon Brick (from the family brickworking business) and sat as Member of Parliament for Newcastle upon Tyne from 1874-76 following in his father Sir Joseph’s footsteps. He won the 1885 election but retired from politics the following year to concentrate on his business interests and journalism, and to avoid the political intrigue prevalent in parliament. Scarce.
