FIRST EDITION. Octavo, pp. xvii, [1], 588, [2]. Arsenic green cloth with mauve spine titles. With the original delicately illustrated dust-jacket. A very good book in a very good dust-jacket. Binding is tight and clean. Barely visible foxing to spine cloth, prelims and fore-edges, with some offsetting to end-papers. Two small neat female ownership inscriptions, one from year of publication, the other of soprano Mavis Bennet-Levin. Dust-jacket clipped, a touch of sunning to spine, with a little loss to corners and spine-tips sympathetically repaired to rear.
Holtby’s dazzling final novel demonstrating the height of her literary powers, embedded with her feminist socialist politics against a rich depiction of rural life in inter-war Yorkshire. Holtby began South Riding after the diagnosis of terminal illness. The book was published post-humously and won the James Tait Black Memorial Prize of that year. Scarce.
