Second edition. Octavo, pp., vii, [1], 298, [40]. Illustrated with seven photographic plates. Bound in forest green publishers’ cloth with Egyptian style rolls and central ornament to boards in to boards in black, gilt titles and ornaments to spine, umber brown endpapers. Slightly cocked, cloth has minor wear to corners and miniscule loss at spine tips. With covered bookplate to ffep, and historic library stamps for the “Mercantile Library of New York”. Lacking the “An Egyptian Village in Flood-time” plate. Cloth is tight and clean with bright gilt to spine. Contents clean and free of inscriptions or annotations.
Scarce account written on the author’s time acting as tutor to the sons of the Khedive in 1880. With chapters on “Black Arts- Khedive and Magician”, “A Coptic Dealer in Charms” and “Bazaars at Night”. Butler wrote a number of works on Egypt that spanned from the Coptic era to the medieval period, and he is still considered one of the primary experts on Egyptian Coptic culture.
