Rare early fantasy adventure story of an arctic submarine expedition which leads to an subterranean world with the remains of an ancient civilisation, inhabited by prehistoric and other monsters and a race of subhuman “Wolf-men”. First issued in 1905 in part form in “Boys World”, the sequel “The Vengeance of the Wolf-Men” appeared in the same periodical in parts in 1906 but was never published in book form; the Author was killed in a train crash in the May of that year. The tale is a precursor to other novels in the genre and was published six years before Conan Doyle’s “The Lost World” (1912) and twelve years before Edgar Rice Burroughs “The Land That Time Forgot” (1918) and is an important landmark in the development of the “lost world” genre.
