A handsomely bound example of the important Bennett edition of White’s magnum opus, with extensive notes. “The Natural History and Antiquities of Selborne” is widely regarded as both the foundation of modern natural history and as a literary classic. Gilbert White (1720-1793) was the third generation of his family to serve as vicar of Selborne in Hampshire, and was the first naturalist to study the migration of birds and to attempt an ornithological census; he was highly influential in later studies of the natural world, particularly with regard to record keeping and fieldwork. Since it was first published in 1789 the work has never been out of print. Heavyweight, so a contribution towards increased postage costs will be requested for overseas delivery.
