Comprehensive history of the spread of monasteries in England and their dissolution, which together with Knowles’ “The Monastic Order in England: A History of its Development from the Times of St Dunstan to the Fourth Lateran Council 940-1216” covering the period leading up to this, forms the standard work on the subject and is one of the greatest achievements of historical scholarship.
