FIRST EDITION, INSCRIBED ASSOCIATION COPY. Octavo, pp., 30. Folding sketch plan to rear. Full maroon roan with gilt titles to upper board and floral endpapers. Spine tips worn, with 2 cm loss to spine near head; light wear to corners. Bookplate of the North of England Institute of Mining and Mechanical Engineers to ffep without any entry details or numbers, and inscription from the Author to front paste-down in ink: “Clara Simpson from her affectionate husband John Bell Simpson Sept 1910”. Overall a Very Good copy.
Paper on medieval coal mining by monastic orders in England, Scotland and Wales by John Bell Simpson (1837-1926). The Author was President of the North of England Institute of Mining and Mechanical Engineers from 1891-93, and President of the Institution of Mining Engineers from 1909-11; his career included directorships at Elswick Colliery and the Wallsend and Hebburn Coal Company, and the history of the coal trade was one of his many interests. Rare, COPAC locates one copy only at Newcastle. Not at the BL.
