Tissue- guarded engraved portrait frontispiece and large vignette to title-page; facsimile of the original green cover of monthly parts to [xxi] and 12 illustrations by Luke Fildes to “Edwin Drood” and 14 illustrations by various artists including E. G. Dalziel and F. A. Fraser to “Christmas Books”. Original cerise buckram bound by Leighton-Straker Bookbinding Company, with gilt titles to black label to spine; top edge gilt, others uncut. Spine lightly sunned and cloth a little scuffed, with bumped upper corners. Contents clean with no annotation or inscriptions. A very good copy. Dickens’ final novel together with 20 stories, of which 15 from “Household Words” and “All the Year Round” were printed as “Christmas Stories” in 1871, and the remaining 5 were written as magazine Christmas numbers. Dickens’ last story “Edwin Drood” was unfinished at the time of his death; six parts had already been written but he left no clues as to the remainder of the plot, so many conclusions have been attempted and suggestions made. The text here follows that of the original edition of Edwin Drood”. Part of the sought-after Nonesuch Dickens, which brought the deluxe standard of the private publication to an edition printed on a trade press rather than by hand, allowing for a larger print run and a wider audience. £200.00
