Biography of the clergyman, author and antiquarian John Hodgson (1779-1845). Hodgson’s “An Account of the Explosion at Felling” appealed for aid for the widows and orphans of the mining disaster in 1813, and was highly influential in the formation of the Society for Preventing Accidents in Coal Mines. Hodgson also worked with Sir Humphry Davy on greater safety from explosions caused by methane, and was one of the very first people to enter a mine using the Davy Lamp. His major work was the “History of Northumberland”, begun in 1817, which remained unfinished at his death; the Northumberland County History Committee eventually produced a fifteen volume work over the course of thirty years. Author James Raine (1791-1858), a fellow clergyman, author and antiquarian, founded the Surtees Society, which has been invaluable in the publication of works relating to the north of England.
