One of only 5 battledore titles produced by printer William Davison of Alnwick. Battledores were early learning aids for children, named after the game battledore which was played with a shuttlecock and wooden paddles; the paddles were similar in shape to the earlier children’s learning aid the hornbook and the name was adopted for simple printed sheets usually with alphabets and illustrations. Davison is famed for his use of type, his cast-metal ornaments and his excellent eye as a provincial jobbing printer. Scarce.
