Subject George Morland (1763-1804), the prolific English painter and Royal Academician whose works often featured rustic scenes around the agricultural year, smugglers and Gypsies, is well known for his studies of horses and dogs. The original upon which this is based is still at the British Museum ( No.1868,0328.335) and is described thus: Portrait of George Morland, artist; whole-length standing, with hands behind his back, looking over to left, fireplace behind him, wearing green jacket and blue and white striped waistcoat. Pen and grey ink with watercolour”. Jospeh Crawhall II (1821–1896) shared a love of many of the same subjects as Morland and was a gifted caricaturist, Charles Keene, of Punch fame, was the recipient albums of watercolours from Crawhall that Keane subsequently used as inspiration for his own work.
