Richard Burn (1709-85) was Justice of the Peace for Westmorland, and noted scholar of the law; his “Justice of the Peace and Parish Officer” (1755) was the standard work on legal matters relating to J. P.s and ran to thirty editions, half of which were produced after his death. Burn also wrote several other notable legal works and, with Joseph Nicolson, co-authored the “History and Antiquities of the Counties of Westmorland and Cumberland” (1777) which is still used by local historian. From the legal library of Derby solicitor Anthony Lax-Maynard (1742-1825) of West House, Chesterfield, Derbyshire.
