INSCRIBED FIRST EDITION. Quarto, pp. xii, 183, [1]. 10 plates in colour, of which 1 over 3 sheets, plus 79 black-and-white of which 2 over 3 sheets each. Publishers’ grey cloth with gilt titles to brown panel to spine and Smithsonian device to upper board; no dust-jacket, as issued. Lower board unobtrusively damp-stained and later leaves slightly rippled, largely affecting end matter. Printed bookplates of Bewick scholars Iain Bain and Nigel Tattersfield to front pastedown, and gift inscribed to first blank by the Author to Iain Bain, with further inscription to ffep in Tattersfield’s hand with his initials, noting that the book was gifted to him by Iain Bain.
 
Smithsonian Institution Bulletin 222. A study of the little-known English artist (1701-1780) and his work, with catalogue of his chiarascuro and colour prints.
