First British Edition. Two volumes. Quartos, pp., xi, 383, [1]; [6], 415, [1]. Complete with colour frontispiece tipped-in to each volume and numerous maps and drawings throughout the text. Publishers’ finely reeded blue cloth with gilt titles to spine and in black to upper board, and with hemispherical ship and setting sun motif in gilt to each upper board. Spine tips and corners a little rubbed. Text-block edge and endpapers lightly foxed and browned, with a little scattered foxing to margins. Tidy pencil annotation to front paste-down Volume I referring to contents, and printed school prize completed in ink to ffep, dated 1914-15 and presented to Annie Laing. A handsome set in very good condition overall.
First Edition in English, translated by Arthur G. Chater. Contents include the earliest exploration before Pytheas, through the voyages of the Norsemen and the discovery of America, John Cabot and the Portuguese discoveries in the North-West.
