FIRST EDITION. Quarto, pp., xii, 178. With 30 monochrome photographic plates including frontispiece of Ruthwell Cross. Bound in publisher’s blue cloth with gilt titles to spine and gilt titles inside wheel-head cross motif to upper board; top edge gilt, others uncut. Cloth very lightly soiled. Endpapers faintly toned else contents clean, tight, and free from inscriptions or ownership marks. A very good copy.
 
Scarce. Pevsner described the crosses of Ruthwell and Bewcastle as “the greatest achievement of that date in the whole of Europe”. Then part of the Kingdom of Northumbria, the Ruthwell Cross is the most elaborate Anglo-Saxon monumental structure in Britain and this work describes in detail the inscriptions and sculpture of the crosses and their symbolism and meaning. Heavyweight so a contribution towards increased postage costs will be requested for overseas delivery.
